Wax coating edible fruits is toxic: truth or hoax?

December 10, 2009

I bought a nice box of Clementine. A tag on the box says: “Schale oberflächenbehandelt – nicht zum Genuss geeignet”, which more or less means “Do not eat the peel; it is not good for your health“.

I got surprised, as I touch the peel while peeling the clementine and then I touch the unpeeled clementine to eat it, WHAT is potentially dangerous in the peel? Two E numbers are among the Clementine “ingredients”: E-904 (Shellac) and E-914 (Oxidized polyethylene wax).

Integration von Ausländern: Tun die Schweizer selbst genug, um Ausländern zu integrieren?

December 7, 2009

To my opinion, no. In Switzerland the lack of information for foreigners is amazing. Comparis.ch has been far more helpful than Swiss citizens working at the immigration office /municipality. The only right information we got came from Swiss friends or from other foreigners. Swiss natives complain immigrants do not respect the rules, although too many Swiss citizens barely know them, or give wrong information, or better do not respect them.

Thus, the new xenophobic, intolerant and racist initiative of the SVP is unbearably stupid. Asking “Integration von Ausländern: Tun Ausländer selbst genug, um sich einzugliedern?” is highly hypocrite.

The strange case of Tariq Ramadan, a moderate Muslim.

December 6, 2009

It is interesting to read an interview to Tariq Ramadan about the Swiss minaret-verbot initiative. It is always interesting to read what a moderate Muslim may think about Europeans. I have a sneaky suspicion that if Prof. Ramadan got to speak before the initiative, minaret would have been forbidden with much more than 57% of the votes.

How to organize your Christmas shopping without losing your holy mood

December 5, 2009

A little trick to save your Christmas mood: do the shopping you must, you need, you want to … just weeks in advance! We were able to do everything today. The satisfaction we obtained is unlimited. No more stress of the last days, not too much crowd in the shops and shop keepers still nice and polite. All clothe sizes, all customizations, all colors still available… at once! You have no idea how relieved do I feel this evening.

This is the time to understand Switzerland, not to be ashamed of it

December 2, 2009

For the simple reason that the same initiative in other European countries would have led to the same result: European citizens are afraid of Muslim communities and do consider arrogant their will to build symbols of Islamic power (like minarets may be considered).

We can think Europeans are ignorant, racists, slaves of extreme right parties and shocked by the economical crisis. Or we can open our eyes of left winged supporters and recognize a problem there is!

It could be an information problem, it could be a racist problem, it could be a real integration problem.
