BPA toxicity admitted! What is your next move?

January 31, 2008

bisphenola.jpg

On the 9th of August I reminded you what are the negative effects of stocking food and drinks in plastic, even if plastic “for food”. Today the toxicity is confirmed, but I didn’t see so much rumor about it. Plastic bottles/containers heated up with boiling water, as shown experimentally, release high quantities of bisphenol-A, even when the container is cooled down and rinsed out. Even if these quantities are below the “safety limits”, I don’t see any reason why we should drink tea with bisphenol-A and have higher probabilities of breast/prostate cancers in the future. That’s why we will not use our plastic water boiler anymore (left in the picture) and we bought a new water boiler made of metal (on the right).

GATTACA vs d5SICS and dMMO2

January 31, 2008

anu.jpg

Once upon a time we had four nucleotides (A,G,C,T) pairing to form the double helix of DNA. Today two artificial nucleotides, d5SICS and dMMO2, able to pair and to be included in DNA structures, have been synthesized. Going from 4 to 6 nucleotides is a big leap for the genetic code and especially for amino acids variability. If now we can have 4^3 possible different amino acids (as each one could be determined during protein synthesis by codes of tree nucleotides), in the future we could have 6^3 different combinations available. Known amino acids nowadays are 20-23. How could artificial life made out of possible 216 amino acids (just hypothesis for a non degenerated code) look like?

I’ve seen the light …

… of the beamer projecting a movie from 1977 on my living room walls. This was really an experience.  I’ve never seen this movie in cinemas, and today it has been totally exciting!!! All next evenings are booked for Lorana cinema :) Do you recognize the movie?

Of “winterval” and “parents”: a typical British masochist attitude

January 30, 2008

Months of discussion about the problem of wishing Merry Christmas passed by. Did Muslim communities complain about this offending Christian tradition to celebrate Jesus birth on the 25th of December? Did they prefer being wished of happy holidays or happy Winterval? Nobody knows.

The never sleeping English government now thinks about the discriminations everyday gay people suffer in public schools. Teachers should not refer anymore to mom and dad when speaking to kids. What about kids having two moms or two dads? Teachers should better use the world “parents”, so that kids of gay / lesbian / trans gender / bisexual / couples do not feel more discriminated than what they already are. I wait for the day England will abolish the term “British”, because discriminating who doesn’t want to belong to that funny Queen driven community.

By the way, Arnie already did it in California!

If you’re concerned about your privacy …

January 30, 2008

… I suggest you this website. Their anonymous web surfing program (you change your IP address via some proxy servers around the globe) is quite cheap (18 USD) and it works. However, don’t expect to surf as fast as without it.

Pornography is just three clicks away from here …

January 29, 2008

… and this in Florida (US and A) is punished with (at least) criminal investigations! That’s what happened to a school cop having a MySpace page. A friend of him, in his page, had a link to one of the thousands “Amateur Sex” websites out there. So my dear friends, if one day I’ll have to go to live in Florida, don’t get angry if I cut all your links out of Lorana blog. And don’t click on the picture of this post: doing it, pornography is just 2 clicks away!

The Facebook menace!

January 29, 2008

3 friends of mine joined Facebook last week and requested me to visit them. To visit them I had to insert my personal data and to open a new Facebook account. I found it quite disturbing: why should I register if I want only to give a look to my friend data? Is their invitation not enough to permit me to watch their data? Why Facebook puts itself between me and my friends?

Silvio Berlusconi ha bisogno di te: votalo!

January 26, 2008

Proteggi  Berlusconi: vota Berlusconi. E se non hai un motivo, fallo almeno contro le toghe rosse!
