It’s not Christmas but soon it’s my birthday and I was offered to choose a nice digital reflex camera to be gifted. Reading around in the net what I found at the highest “consumer” level are the Nikon D80 and the Canon 450D. For what I’ve seen these cameras are quite similar. As I already have a Canon EF 28-80 1:3.5-5.6 II objective I would rather go for the Canon. Or are there some unknown reasons that should push me to buy a Nikon? Did you have bad experiences with your EOS Digital cameras? On the other hand, if the munificent sponsor will not get upset, I would even dare to go up into professional entry level and rather choose between a Nikon D200 or the Canon EOS 40D. Any good suggestions? I don’t need my camera for job, but I am quite good in using a reflex, and I would like to have a camera as much as possible customizable. Any suggestions?

Even if I know the Nikon D80 to be a very good camera, I suggest you to buy a Canon model because you allready have Canon EF lens.
As you know we own a Canon 400D and we love it.
I think you should focus on the difficult choose between Canon 450D and 40D.

I suggested you buy 450D and save the money for better lens not for 40D. for details of comparison of 450D,40D, Nikon D80, D300, canon lens see

I started with Canon XT or 350D two years ago and now upgraded to 40D. But I will keep all the lenses. Lenses keep their value and Cameras will be out of date very soon once the new models come out. By the way, your blog is great!

Oh well, thanks a lot! Sadly it seems I’ve to wait until April for the 450D in Switzerland…as I’ve to wait until May for the Quadcore Q9450..and I have to wait until who knows when for the Asus eee… Switzerland: the land of waiting

http://www.digitec.ch has really good prices for Canon 450D and 70-300 EF … do you know better prices than these?

My birthday will come soon ..so I cannot tell you yet anything about them
I had a Canon EOS300 (it’s not digital) reflex camera and I was really happy with it. That’s why I will buy a Canon again.

To Jordan:
I am like you a few years ago when I bought my first DSLR Canon Rebel XT. Now upgraded to Canon 40D, I love both Cameras. Some of my friends have Nikon D80, D40, they are happy too. The key for you now is to choose Nikon or Canon, not Canon 450D or Nikon D80. Once you go into one brand and build a DSLR system, it is hard to switch. Nikon used to have better low priced lenses, but Canon is catching up with the recent Canon 18-55mm IS f/3.5-5.6 ($100 more with 450D) and Canon 55-250mm IS ($299, excellent review on photozone.de). I strongly recommend you to read http://web500.us/which-one-to-buy-canon-xsi-canon-450d-or-nikon-d80-nikon-d40/ and several links in photo.net inside the post.

The major advantage of 450D over Nikon D80 is the live LCD. Some people say, i don’t need that. Actually it is very useful. If you shoot macro, you can use the LCD to magnify the scene and use MF more accurately. Also, you can connect the camera to computer using USB and look at the monitor before you shoot.

I switched over to Canon since 1975. I threw away Nikon since then. It’s about personality. If you like hard core control, go for Nikon. If you are a kind of creative, artistic and romantic with ability to do professional work and like to remain as advanced consumer, Canon is the choice. Having said all these, the after sales service has been more and more important. The cost of maintenance, flag off, labour, parts, speed, professionalism and management style in your city will give you the royalty or regret for life for a wrongful choice of brand. I liked the old service team of Canon in Hong Kong, Japan, USA, and struggling in Australia (Sydney). The first time Nikon encounter at 1975 has made my decision to turn away, then in the next 5 years, I recommended my schoolmates (I was the photographic club chairman) to use Canon. At least 30 cameras and 50 lenses bought. How can I recommend a Nikon since then? No way. All in all, Canon EOS 450D will be the first Digital SLR in my cabinet. I cannot tolerate non-full-frame sensor without EF-S lenses or over-priced EOS 5D, and the waiting-to-be-mature 30D and 400D. EOS 450D is the first Canon DSLR with a natural “Canon” film based SLR feel DSLR on my hand. Got it?

It’s hard to wait to get it
But it’s not yet available in Switzerland. It will be, however, very soon!

Let’s me tell this story to you. One of my hardcore Nikon friends went to Europe and forgot the Nikon battery. He went all over the places, with a lot of camera stores only carry Canon brand batteries!

I collected some very essential accessories for Canon 450D here: owning digital SLR is costly!

Canon Rule!!
April 6, 2008 at 1:35 pm |
Canon 450d vs D80. Canon 450d has live view mode, IS Lens, 12 Megapixels and is lightweight. Specs are far better then the D80 by miles.
April 8, 2008 at 10:48 pm |
Go for the 450! You already own a pretty lens, so keep it and buy a new digital body for it. As photozone.de testet the new kit lens coming along with the 450 I was pretty suprised seeing such a high rating for such a “cheap” lens – as was the reviewer. I ordered the body with kit lens alon with canons new 55-250 lens to have two pretty good tested (can’t say anything yet because delivery delays) lenses with optical image stabilisation. By the way: I’ldlike to read another review for the case than the cnet one. Does anyone knows a site that is reviewing cases on a professional level like dpreview.com? (They didn’t do it yet…)
Anyway, good night…

I have my new 450D EOS from less than 24 hours, but for what I’ve seen until now (read HERE) I AM COMPLETELY SATISFIED!!! Thanks for the help you all gave me in choosing this wonderful camera!

You are so lucky! I cannot wait to upgrade from my 350D to the 450D! Canon makes such high quality cameras and lenses.

first time shooter i would say wait for new canon 1000 thats coming!! cheaper than the 450d 7 point AF
June 12, 2008 at 9:34 pm |
dont go for nikon d60 either 450d or d80 i think D80 is slightly better but if u can afford the canon lenses then stick to canon 450d. i know the d80 is great but getting out of date and the new d90 will appear in a few months which will Be very very good. All of these cameras has + and – more plused to the D80 but then the d90 will come. I had great pics ftom my d50 portraits and landscapes, canon better for speed sport. if u have $$ then go to canon to buy the real good lenses that will make the canon camera much better!!
July 31, 2008 at 12:44 pm |
can you connect these cameras to the computer?
July 31, 2008 at 3:46 pm |
of course. they have a 2.0 usb.
July 31, 2008 at 8:01 pm |
Thank you.
Im thinking about getting the canon eos 450d.
Do you recommend it?
July 31, 2008 at 10:29 pm |
As you can read in this blog, I am completely satisfied with it. Two friends of mine bought a 450D as well after seeing mine. And they didn’t complain at all
August 4, 2008 at 9:01 pm |
can anyone recommend a reasonably priced all round zoom lense for the 450D for sports as well as portraiture
August 17, 2008 at 6:14 am |
The 450D is the perfect starter camera imo. Lose noise at high iso will come in handy for amateurs. It has live-view for those coming from a P&S. The only gripe I have with canon is that in order to get really really good lens, you almost always have to go with an L lens. Its quite expensive. I highly recommend buying a 450D(body only – since the 18-55 IS kit lens is really subpar) and mating that with Canon’s 17-55mm EFS F2.8 USM lens. I just purchased this lens and it is AMAZING. I wouldnt hesitate to compare this lens with any prime lens in that focal range. I am now saving for two more lens to complete my set which are Canon 10-22mm and Canons 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM lens.
August 17, 2008 at 9:29 pm |
What is a L lens?
August 22, 2008 at 9:42 am |
get a 450d. a nikon is good when it comes to color but canon has this knack of making low-light shots impressive. also, i noticed that nikon tends to hold back its features though of course, they sell cheap.
August 22, 2008 at 9:45 am |
Hi, Lorenzo.
An L type canon lens is more stabilized and offer sharper photos.
August 29, 2008 at 11:56 am |
Hi I am an amateur in taking photos but i do have some concept on taking a good photo, as for now i don’t own any camera at all. but i’m looking forward to buy a 450D canon. the first time i saw it, i know i gonna love this cam. Can anyone suggest if what tould be the appropriate lens i should buy as an amateur?

Even without L lens, I am really satisfied with the 18-55 standard and the 70-300

Hey, really like your blog! I also am thinking about purchasing a Canon 450d. Do you think the price is going to come down significantly over the next few months?
October 15, 2008 at 7:19 am |
Yeah sure, but don’t expect them to drop too low. After all they’re not crappy ones. I’ll be buying the Canon 450D this week
can’t wait! thanks for the blog it ..:: R U L 3 Z ::..
October 16, 2008 at 12:49 pm |
I don’t know about the prices … but I can say I am still totally satisfied by my 450D. Now that I’ve learned how to modify EVERYTHING before shooting a picture in Fully manual mode, I’ve really a lot of fun with it. As I hadn’t to read the manual, I would say the control Menu are totally intuitive

I just received my Canon 450D in the mail yesterday. It’s still sitting in the box as I have been too busy to open it. Since this is my first DSLR camera, I am relieved to hear such good reviews. I can’t wait to start using it.

Hi! I am looking to buy a camera something like you are tolking here… canon 450d or nikon 80d. But I have a question. What is a diferec betwin canon 450d and canon digital rebel xsi, and I will order it in USA, so can I find 450d not digital rebel xsi?
November 9, 2008 at 12:45 pm |
I thought 450D and Rebel xsi were the same camera. Just different names for different markets. Am I right.
November 11, 2008 at 3:14 pm |
Yes, same camera
November 20, 2008 at 10:11 pm |
What are you think, for a lens for a canon 450D! What is the best for the begginer, I think something like from 18 to 100?
November 21, 2008 at 12:44 am |
Why don’t you just give a chance to the 18-55 you find often with the kit? And later you could buy a zoom like 70-300.
November 29, 2008 at 12:15 am |
Thanks for the great INFO!!!
I’m also thinking of buying an 450D for me and my GF as this years christmas present (if i can persuade her).
Lets start with that I NEVER owned a System camera before. The reason I want one is to start taking pictures (oc) but it just doesn’t happen with the compact camera since there is no fun with it, it’s only good for parties.
Now, some people say, stick with the lens that comes in the kit, some people say go with only the body.
For me as a noob, I feel that the one that comes in the kit will be fine.
Also, where can I actually learn all the settings, I don’t know almost anything about ISO and shit, could you just point me in the right direction, thnx!!!
November 29, 2008 at 10:57 am |
In the kit, in addition to the manual, you find a small leaflet with most of set up commands you can change. Just bring it with you
You can just keep in mind a few things for each mode when you start:
- green box mode, everything automatic (always useful for rapid shots – but don’t be lazy, try to work with the other modes too)
- Tv mode, you change the shoot timing: try with low fractions (1/40) with moving stuff like a river and compare the results when you shoot the some subject with high fractions (1/2000)
- Av mode, you change the aperture, thus the focus plane depth: see differences when making portraits or night lights
- sport mode: enjoy the auto focus servo by keeping the shooting button half pressed and follow the moving subject
- use high ISO when you have low light, no tripod and flash is useless (like with distant subjects)
- learn how sensitive are the Av steps and choose the light you want to have in the picture.
… and just play with it. Read the manual carefully and make experiments. you’ll have fun.
November 30, 2008 at 10:23 pm |
Thnx for the fast answer.
I will def. buy one soon, we are most certainly getting a Staffordshire Bullterrier early next year (around the 12 of jan) and I will be taking ALOT of pics, hence alot of training.
November 30, 2008 at 10:27 pm |
Sorry for double post.
Is there something I have to buy besides the Kit?
Someone who sold one online was saying something about an UV-lens to protect, and that this makes the camera last longer?!
True?
November 30, 2008 at 10:41 pm |
Tripe post
(SORRY, just so excited).
two questions:
1. Should I go for CF or SDHC? Which is the best performance wise, and how expensive do I need to take the maximum number of pictures/sec? Would I need a card like
SanDisk Extreme® IV, or is III enough? Also, i was thinking of getting a 16 or 32 GB or is this overkill? How much space does a raw pic take?
2. Do i need the thing you put outside the lens to take away sun? is it expensive? When do you need and how big of a difference is it?

I enjoy this blog, I am currently on the edge of buying a digital SLR and as some of you know, if you want to buy a new cam, you can’t wait to run into a store and buy like the 1st one you come across…. or isn’t it with everything you want to buy? I guess so
I’ll probably buy the Canon 450d as well, it’s pity though that there is only a max. of 30 secs shutter speed. The old 35mm cams had a ‘B’ function with which you could expose for like 4 hours or more if u want… it seems that most digital slr -well, the cheap ones- don’t have this nice feature.
December 5, 2008 at 1:14 pm |
What you write is not exact. The 450D has the BULB option available in manual mode.
Maybe you speak about other cheap SLRs
December 5, 2008 at 1:17 pm |
..of course you need to buy a remote switch to use the bulb option
December 5, 2008 at 1:20 pm |
Ok guys now it is MY turn for questions:
if this winter I will be so lucky to get Northern lights in my camera, what are the best settings I can use?

I don’t think it’s even a question since you already have a Canon lens.
But in my opinion, I like the Nikon D80 better because of the feel, the controls, the build, and I like how the company operates.
The D80 feels better in my hands since they are a bit big and trying out my friend’s Canon (for the past months when I couldn’t get my own camera) I found that they were a bit too small… The build for the D80 is strong as well, I dropped it on a hard brick floor and the only thing that broke was the lens hood.
As for the company itself, I find that Nikon serves the photographer, not the consumers/masses that are into bells and whistles that they will need once in a blue moon.
However, I will agree that Canon does have a bigger lens selection and cheaper too x]
I’m also contemplating this choice as well
December 13, 2008 at 6:17 pm |
*damn clicked the wrong button* (cont.) between 450D and the Nikon D80. Although I tried both cameras and my dad owns a D80, the main factor for me is the price. I’m a 15 year old with no job -.- But for the long term, I’d go with the D80.
December 20, 2008 at 10:56 am |
I bought the RC-1 remote control for the 450d. It works perfectly for the bulb option: you press it once, the shutter opens, and it stays open as long until you press the remote button again.

To me, of course Nikon D80. It is more stable than Canon, and long lasting. Tomorrow I am gonna buy that
January 30, 2009 at 6:43 am |
What do you mean with “more stable and “long lasting”? Does Canon brake easily?
July 19, 2009 at 9:19 pm |
I am not sure I understand this. Are someone actually comparing the D80 against the Eos 450??? The D80 is miles better than the 450 in control and quality. The EOS is like a cheap toy in comparison and feel. Just try holding the two cameras and you will just know which is the better. If you want to compare Nikon and Canon models perhaps the D60 vs 450 would be a realistic comparison.

the nikon d90 is a great camera, but i personally like the canon 450d. They are very similar cameras but it all depends what your into.
the canon has more megapixels but the d90 has hd video. if i was you go for the canon
September 1, 2009 at 12:16 am |
Having video on a DSLR is nice but it seems like just a cry to attract consumers saying that “we have video!!! yaay!!” coz we can’t beat canon’s megapixels and its dings and whistles. Canon is the way to go!
So decide, do you want to be a pro with photos or a movie director? heheheh If you choose to be a movie director then a DSLR is not the right choice for you.
