Eat proper and save the planet from global warming

April 16, 2008

In the movie you can find here (in Italian, from Report) a nice truth about food prices is shown. Let’s make the carrot example. Carrots are sown, watered, fertilized, collected and transported. For these first actions petrol, humans, chemicals and water are needed. We cannot go every day to the fields to take care of our carrots :)

BUT, how often do you find “simple-carrots” at the supermarket? Instead you do usually find washed and cut carrots inside a plastic box closed by a plastic film. Those last actions are not actually needed. First, you add to the carrot price additional human work, water, petrol and pollution (the plastic box will be burned). Second, you pay the bloody carrot a lot more!

If you buy fruits and vegetable not growing in your land / in the time you buy them, you add a huge petrol, transport and human work price to the product. A lot of pollution, global warming and less money in your pocket are not justified by strawberries in January.

Think about it next time you go to the supermarket. Buy locally and seasonally!
