Virtual reality goes pigs

Pigs are virtual reality best friends. Medicine students in many USA universities will not practice the first incision on pigs anymore. Through the last 14 years, 90% of Medicine universities switched from animals to computer simulations. Maintenance costs, difference between pig and human bodies and maybe some ethical pressure made this possible. Of course not all Universities agree with this decision. The famous John Hopkins center, for example, still uses live animals for practice. “No amount of book learning, lectures or computer simulation can substitute for the experience of working with living tissue, and the unpredictability and bloodiness of real surgery“, said Johns Hopkins’ director of surgery.
