The after-all not-so-safe Zürich

May 19, 2008

I am quite shocked to hear again the same kind of accident happened (to different friends of mine) here in Switzerland. Burglars entered my friend apartment when he was on holiday and stole notebook and other valuables. Zürich police declared to my friend, once he came back home: “as you live in a flat on the corner of the building, this fact had higher probabilities to happen”. End of the story. Good Zürich is known to be a safe city!

Help China: donate ONLINE now

May 19, 2008

No online donation to the Chinese Red Cross seems to be possible. However, HERE you find the bank coordinates for direct money transfer.

If you prefer to donate online, you can do it easily through:

British Red Cross (minimal offer: 20 pounds)

ADRA (minimal offer: 25 dollars)

Mercy Crops (free donation)

UMCOR (free donation)

Direct relief International (minimal 25 dollars – not yet targeted to China only but to general emergencies)

All these associations are recommended from the Charity Navigator .

We donated through the Mercy Corps. Here is why (from Mercy Corps website): “In the aftermath of a powerful earthquake in central China that has killed at least 22,000 people and left as many as five million homeless, Mercy Corps is responding to survivors’ needs alongside a longtime local partner. We have procured critical supplies such as water, noodles, milk and shelter items — enough to fill 22 trucks — and sent them to families in the devastated city of Mianyang. You can help us rush relief to thousands of families who have lost homes and loved ones. [...] Mercy Corps has been assisting families and vulnerable communities in China since 2001. One of our programs — Project GLOW — is centered in Sichuan Province, the epicenter of the earthquake. We have confirmed that our staff and partners in the area are safe [...] Over the last five years, more than 90% of resources from Mercy Corps allocated directly to programs
