[SOLVED] Choppy Bink videos / stuttering audio and video games intro on GRID and others / low fps on high end PCs with XP

It seems that several PC game intros made with Bink and in game graphics are strongly slowed down by something coming from XP SP3.  If you have:

- Bink videos with cut, stutternig audio in Prince of Persia and Bioshock 2 and Race Driver GRID and many others (if you are here you probably know)

- Slow games

- Low fps even on high-end hardware like mine (ATI HD5850 and i7860 on Asus p55 Deluxe E)

…and if oddly these issues came after you enjoyed your games for sometime without problems (people report installing XP updates / other programs (?) were the causes), below is the solution

Solution step-by-step:

Start>Accessories>Command prompt
cd..
cd..

When your command prompt is in C:\>, then:
edit boot.ini

With the arrow keys bring your blinking white prompt to the right end of the last line.
Write /usepmtimer at the end of this line (so that the right part of the line is similar to what you see in the post picture)
In the menu file of the edit blue window choose save and then close
Reboot

ENJOY YOUR FULL POWER PC AGAIN!!!!

  1. Sentient6 says:

Thanks you SOOO MUCH. I’ve been having problems with Batman AA stuttering, and this fixed it. THANK YOU.

  2. Lorenzo says:

I am happy it helped you, too. I also took a long time to find a solution. Happy gaming :)

  3. Devon says:

    my boot.ini already had this.
    and bink still messes around.
    any ideas?

    • Jack says:

If you google this problem, people changed BIOS settings (turned off speedstep tech and sleeping stages) and set up the Asus Turbo software at max (instead of auto) … it did not help me, though.

  4. Andrew says:

Thank you a lot. I had to live with this problem for 2 months(in Splinter Cell Conviction, The Saboteur..). I’ve updated lot’s of drivers on my PC, looked for the solution from time to time. And finaly I found quick and helpful solution here.

    • Lorenzo says:

Yeah, I am happy it worked with you too! Sadly for Devon it did not – but I have no clue more than this..

  5. Apocalypse says:

I tried to do what you said but when i open boot.ini there is nothing written in it the file is empty, what am i doing wrong ?

    • Lorana says:

If your c:\boot.ini is empty, you can fill it up with this:

      [boot loader]
      timeout=30
      default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
      [operating systems]
      multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional” /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

  6. Egas says:

Anyone know a fix for windows 7? i get the same problem as here…

    • Lorana says:

I must say all my problems related to choppy Bink videos in XP got solved with Win7 Enterprise 64bit.

  7. Portal is back and better than ever! The tests are as mind bending as ever, and they’ve added new elements, like light bridges and emancipation gates. The graphics are smooth and attractive, but nothing that’s going to make your jaw drop. The controls are as simple and effective as the first game. But then, none of that was what worried me. I had no doubt that they would be able to recreate and expand upon the technical aspects of the first game. My concern was whether or not they would manage to capture and continue the personality and sense of humor of the first game. I am very pleased to report that the sequel does not disappoint. The sequel pics up right where the first game left off, and GLaDOS holds a grudge. Her insults, passive aggressive comments, and general malice will have you chuckling throughout the game. Your new companion and guide robot also adds to the character of the game, though he can be a bit heavy handed at times. If you enjoyed the first game, you will love the sequel, both for its expanded challenges, and its unique personality. As long as you enjoy a good puzzle and have a sense of humor, you will never regret this purchase.

You sir, are my new hero!! Been trying to solve this problems for years now! Tried almost everything, except buying a new computer lol Thank you!

Important to say that /usepmtimer has to be written at the end of the last line and not in a new paragraph or it won’t work.

Epic win for you! Thank you!

  12. Lorenzo says:

    Great! Enjoy gaming again!

  13. Brenda says:
