Cats are shot? In Switzerland?!
I’m sorry for lots of question marks, I just always imagined this country to be one of those that treat animals with lots of care. I remember a story when s Swiss girl wanted to call special services because her neighbors locked their cat out on the balcony and she thought it was cruel and there were professionals to deal with this situation.
Thus, it’s very new info to me that they actually shoot ( really??)cats there in Switzerland.
The cat in the picture is very handsome and he looks pretty happy with his life
Cats are not “generally” shot in Switzerland. However, cats gone wild are legally seen as dangerous for the ecosystem equilibrium. Therefore, here in Switzerland it is not illegal to shoot ex house-cats who ran wild.
Recently, the green party proposed to abolish this law, but they lost.
The problem is how to tell cats who ran wild from house cats. Modern microchips are inserted into hear skin, I suppose – not so visible, uh? I am sure Swiss citizens are not going around shooting every cat without collar they see on the streets
Nevertheless, if the cat coming visiting us is a cat who ran wild, possibly he will be shot down one day – unless we buy a fake collar
Oh my goodness, poor cat! I hope he’s survived so far. We are also providing a sometimes home for three wild kitties… It’s fun times! Alexandra (who commented above) pointed me to your blog.
3! Wild! Kitties! … Ariel, I wonder if you would go to jail for such crime in Switzerland
The green cat is still happy and alive, and with temperatures close to 0°C you bet we will see him often Anyway, he his fed well and with the fat he gained in the last month he should be freezing-proof!
[...] week temperatures quickly dropped and snow covered houses, roads… and cats run wild, like “our” green cat. He adapted to the new season by staying overnight (!) in our flat. It is quite annoying being [...]

I see, thanks for the explanation. Well I guess that’s the other face of civilization, so to say. It’s sad.
The cat, though, has clearly adopted you as his humans so thus, at least theoretically, it’s not wild anymore.
Enjoy his company, he looks like a good buddy.
